Frequently Asked Questions

Steve is available on Instagram and Facebook to answer questions directly or through live chat on site.

What is protein powder?

Protein powder is a common nutritional supplement typically high in protein and low in carbohydrates and fats. This makes it an effective way to boost the protein in your diet relative to other macronutrients and total calories. Proteins are the macronutrient necessary for muscle growth and immune system function.

Red and white meats including beef, chicken, and fish, are a great source of dietary protein along with eggs, and beans. But getting enough protein from these foods alone means buying, cooking, and eating a lot of food — especially challenging with an on the go lifestyle. Supplementing a healthy diet with protein powder helps you better control your macronutrient intake and supports your muscle development and fat loss goals.

Goals by Steve protein powders are formulated to support specific goals — Bulk for high-muscle weight gain, Shred for burning fat, Grow for lean muscle development, and Recover for faster muscle repair between training sessions while you sleep.

What is whey protein isolate?

Whey protein is a complete protein, meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids necessary in the human diet, produced from cow’s milk. Both whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) are forms of whey refined by removing lactose and other non-protein parts of the whey liquid until a whey protein product is left. While concentrate is refined to about 80% protein, isolate is further refined until it is about 90% protein. This makes whey protein isolate the best protein powder to support muscle growth and fat loss goals.

What is Casein protein?

Like whey, casein is also produced from cow’s milk, but while whey protein is digested over 3-4 hours, casein is absorbed over a period around twice that. This makes it the perfect protein to take before sleep to ensure your body has protein available for muscle repair all day and night.

Because whey contains a higher concentration of the amino acid Leucine, whey protein powder supports the highest level of muscle protein synthesis. But even taken immediately before bed, the protein will be fully digested before you wake up and can eat more protein. This is why the best results for weight loss and muscle development come from a combination of both casein and whey protein supplements.

Casein protein is also extremely valuable for supporting an intermittent fasting diet. It facilitates minimum muscle mass loss while you lose fat. It also enhances muscle development when part of a well structured nutrition and exercise regime. Having a continual source of protein being digested over 8 hours means your muscles are never starving, even with extended gaps between meals.

Where can I find tasty high protein recipes?

Most of your favourite meals with meat, seafood, chicken, eggs, and beans are great sources of protein. But you can also add whey protein powder to oats, smoothies, and even baked goods for a tasty way to boost your protein intake. High protein cookies, brownies, pancakes, cinnamon swirls, and other nutritional baked goods require a few tips and tricks to keep them tasty and make them all-round healthy.

There are plenty of recipes online offering extremely varying levels of success in high protein meals, snacks, and baking recipes. Steve Steel tests online recipes, tweaks them, and creates his own healthy muscle building power foods, all with honest reactions. Follow @steve_steel_goals on Instagram for the latest attempts at nutritional glory or find recipe posts in Blogs by Steve to find only those recipes we recommend and make regularly ourselves.

Can I cook with protein powder?

Cooking with whey protein powder can produce some of the most enjoyable healthy meals and snacks in your diet, break monotony, and satisfy cravings without sacrificing your ideal macronutrient intake. It comes with its own challenges, but our recipes in Blogs by Steve can help guide you navigate these.

One of the biggest misconceptions about cooking with whey protein powder is that denaturing the protein by heating it makes it useless. Heating protein powder does denature the protein, but denatured protein is simply protein that has been partially or fully broken down into its amino acids, exactly as your body does during digestion. This is exactly the same as what happens to protein in meat, fish, and beans when heated.

How can I lose weight?

Losing weight is simple maths! All you need to know is how many calories you use during a day and then eat slightly less calories everyday. If your energy expenditure is larger than your energy intake you will lose weight. However, the hardest part is ensuring that you don’t lose your muscle mass in the process. This is why Casein and Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) protein powders are fantastic when you want to lose fatty tissue but maintain and grow your muscle.

How can I gain mass?

If you struggle to put on muscle the answer lies in heavy consumption of protein and carbs. This is where mass gainer proteins are very useful! A common mistake with hard gainers is actually an overconsumption of protein at one time. The trick is having no more than 45g of protein in an hour, but increasing the frequency of protein intake along with carbs so your body is constantly digesting and distributing protein to your muscles to grow and repair them.

How can I build muscle without putting on fat?

Lean muscle growth is a unique challenge as a fitness goal. In order to put on weight (including muscle mass), you need to consume more calories than you burn in a week. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So faster results usually come from a strict focus on gaining mass or losing weight. But it is entirely possible to build muscle with minimal fat gain or even some fat loss. To do this, you need to combine a diet with either a slight calorie deficit (eat a little less than you burn) for fat loss or around even calories for building muscles with little to no change in fat with a muscle development focused exercise routine.

Grow by Steve was formulated with an extremely high protein density compared with overall calories per serving, with minimal carbs and fats. This makes it the perfect protein powder to support a lean muscle growth goal.

When should I drink protein powder?

Protein from whole foods should provide most of your protein throughout the day. Protein powder can be used to increase your overall protein consumption while controlling the amount of additional carbs and fats. The biggest advantage of protein powder is its specialised uses. For 15 to 30 minutes after exercise, the body is primed to use protein for muscle recovery and development. Missing this window leads to less muscle growth and slower recovery times. Whey protein powders like Grow, Shred, and Bulk by Steve are developed for rapid absorption to meet this need. It can be taken at other times to boost the protein and other nutrients in your diet. Recover by Steve, on the other hand, is a casein protein powder best taken before sleep so the body has a constant source of protein overnight to increase muscle recovery and development. It can also be taken before fasting periods for the same reason.

How do I decide and reach my fitness goals?

Deciding fitness goals should be enjoyable and exciting, not daunting! Firstly, find something that you’ve always wanted to do, be it a muscle up, a heavy deadlift or just increasing your run time. Next, break down its components into more manageable and short term progress goals. Using the muscle up example, you could break it down into training to increase your chin ups, your dips and your core strength separately. Once you can do 15 chin ups and 15 dips with ease you should be able to do a muscle up. Once you’ve achieved that goal it’s time to reevaluate! Maybe your next goal is being able to do 5 muscle ups. Break down your goal into progress goals and start the process over again. The real trick to setting and reaching your goals is making sure you are doing it for yourself and that it’s something that you really want to achieve. The best motivation comes from within!
